Wilkes Softball Splits with Canton in Season Finale

EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University softball team rallied after losing game one 11-7 by posting a 10-2 victory in five innings in game two to earn a split with visiting SUNY Canton Monday afternoon.

Wilkes finishes the 2015 season with a 13-21 overall record.

After Canton took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, Wilkes responded with five runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame. Emily McGrath (Upper Darby, PA/Drexel Hill) started the rally with an RBI single followed by a two-run double from Ally Paskas (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford). Another two-run double from Christina Gambino (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) capped the scoring for Wilkes up 5-3.

Canton responded with four runs in the third to take back the lead 7-5 using three hits to plate the runs.

With Canton leading 9-5, McGrath came through in the bottom of the sixth with a two out, two-run double to cut the advantage to 9-7. Canton pushed the two runs back in the top of the seventh adding insurance to the win in the process.

Brooke Limeberry (Easton, PA/Easton) and Alex Hoops (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) led the Wilkes offense in game one each going 3-for-4. Christina Gambino (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) suffered the loss in the circle pitching five innings allowing twelve hits and nine runs but just one earned due to six costly Wilkes errors in the field.

Wilkes jumped out to a 8-2 lead in the third before adding two more runs in the fourth to eight-run the visitors in game two.

Lacey Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley), Ally Paskas (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) and McGrath all laced RBI hits for the Lady Colonels in the six-run third inning.

Nicole Cumbo (Wyoming, PA/Wyoming Area) received the win in the circle going three innings allowing four hits and just two runs.

Wilkes concludes the 2015 season returning all but three starters for next year's squad.
