Wilkes records its first victory of the season following the two-goal win standing 1-1-1 overall. After Muhlenberg took a 1-0 lead with a goal at the 14:49 mark, Wilkes' Grace Fazzi (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Coughlin) answered with a brilliant shot from deep in the right side of the box curving the ball past the Mules keeper for the score tying the game at one just two minutes later. Wilkes continued its offensive push in the second half as Micaela Oliverio (Carlisle, PA/Trinity) notched her second goal of the season taking a pass from Nicolette Towlen (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) and drilling it past the keeper for a 2-1 lead. Towlen then took her pace at scoring finding the back of the net off an assist from Brittany Gurreri (Dallastown, PA/Dallastown) just ten minutes later as Wilkes led 3-1. Muhlenberg cut the lead to 3-2 with just under twenty minutes to play, but a Gurreri penalty shot was true following a hand ball in the offensive box that put the game out of reach for good. Wilkes held a decisive 21-7 shot advantage in the contest while garnering six corner kicks to the Mules one attempt. Kate Mahoney (Kingston, NH/Central Catholic) received the win in net for Wilkes finishing with four saves on the afternoon. Wilkes returns to the field Wednesday hosting Lebanon Valley College at 4:00 p.m. on the Ralston grass field. Print Friendly Version
