Four Lady Colonels Finish in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Wins Big

LA PLUME, Pa. – Four Lady Colonels finished in double-figures, with three setting new career-high point totals, as the Wilkes University women's basketball team defeated Keystone by a 70-49 final on Monday evening, snapping a seven-game skid.

The Lady Colonels improved to 2-10 with the victory.

Neither team was able to gain much of an advantage through the first ten minutes, with Wilkes holding a 14-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Colonels scored the first eight points of the second quarter, building a 12 point lead at 24-12 with 6:41 remaining in the first half. The Giants cut it to five with a 7-0 run to make the score 24-19, but Wilkes went into halftime with a 29-21 lead.

The Lady Colonels opened the second half on a 12-2 run to push their lead to 18 at 41-23. Wilkes pushed its lead to 23, the largest of the game, following a layup by Cara Basile (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) to make the score 50-27. The Lady Colonel's lead never sunk below 10 points the rest of the way as Wilkes cruised to the 70-49 final.

Wilkes was led by Emily Sofranko (Jim Thorpe, PA/Marian Catholic), who recorded a career-high 15 points and five assists in the game. Emelie Meinhart (Bowmanstown, PA/Palmerton) also set a new career-highs with 13 points and 16 rebounds for her first career double-double. Basile also recorded a double-double, totaling 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Emily Sutton (Shavertown, PA/Lake Lehman) set a new career-high with 10 points off the bench.

Keystone was led by Bryce Garrett (13 points) and Destinee Hall (11 points, 13 rebounds).

The Lady Colonels return to the hardwood on Wednesday when they resume their conference schedule with a 6 pm matchup against MAC Freedom-foe Misericordia at the Marts Center.
