Men's Basketball Knocks off Delaware Valley behind Four in Double-Figures

WILKES-BARRE – Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) finished with 17 points, and Steve Stravinski (Pittston, PA/Pittston), Connor Evans (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse), and Zachary Brunner (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) added 13 points each as the Wilkes University men's basketball team defeated the previously undefeated in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) Delaware Valley University by a 60-57 final on Saturday afternoon at the Marts Center.

The Colonels notched their first win in MAC Freedom play this season, improving to 1-3 and 6-9 overall.

Wilkes jumped out to the first lead, starting the game on a 14-8 run through the first eight minutes. The Aggies battled back to tie it at 21-21 following their own 13-7 run with 6:22 remaining, and neither team would secure more than a one-point lead with the Colonels entering the half down 27-26.

The second half proved more exciting than the first, with Wilkes coming out on an 18-6 run to push its lead to 11 at 44-33 through the first six minutes. Delaware Valley started a 16-5 run of their own to tie the score at 49-49 with only 6:03 to play.

The Aggies pushed through a 6-3 run to secure a 55-52 lead with 3:28 in the game, but the Colonels would not be denied. Wilkes finished the game on an 8-2 run punctuated by two layups from Evans sandwiched between one from
Marcus Robinson (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional). Delaware Valley had two three-point opportunities to end the game, but both were unsuccessful.

Wizar led the way  for the Colonels with 17 points and six rebounds. Evans added 13 points, Stravinski contributed 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds, and Brunner finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Aggies were led by Alex Mastinye, who finished with 14 points and six assists. Chris Moran (12 points, 11 rebounds), and Barry Brockington (11 points, six rebounds) rounded out the double-figure scorers.

Wilkes returns to action on Wednesday when it will travel DeSales University for an 8 pm MAC Freedom Contest, and will return home next Saturday when it will host FDU-Florham at 2 pm.
