Men's Basketball Holds off FDU-Florham in Double Overtime Victory
WILKES-BARRE- The Wilkes University men's basketball team overcame a run by FDU-Florham late in regulation and two feisty overtime periods to earn its second win in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play over FDU-Florham by a 93-89 victory on Friday night.
The Colonels improved to 7-10 overall and 2-4 in MAC Freedom play.
Wilkes held its largest lead at 18 half way through the first period, entering the half with a 35-27 advantage.
The Colonels led by 12, 66-54, with left 4:03 in the second half, but the Devils made a furious comeback, ending the half on a 16-4 run, punctuated by a three-pointer to tie the game with eight seconds left.
Wilkes never trailed in either overtime period. The Colonels were not able to push their lead farther than three points, allowing FDU-Florham to tie the game and send it to a second overtime.
In the second overtime,
Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) converted all eight free throw attempts in the last 22 seconds to close out the game and secure the four-point victory.
Wilkes was led by
Steve Stravinski (Pittston, PA/Pittston), who finished with 27 points and nine rebounds. Wizar (21 points, six rebounds),
Marcus Robinson (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional) (17 points, seven assists), and
Connor Evans (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) (14 points, five rebounds, four assists) rounded out the double-figure scorers.
FDU-Florham was led by Derek Leohner, who totaled 24 points and seven rebounds. Steve Herman added 12 points before fouling out.
With his second basket tonight, Wizar scored his 1,000
th point, making him the 30
th player in Colonels men's basketball history to reach the plateau.
Wilkes returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to cross-town rival King's College for an 8 p.m. MAC Freedom matchup.
