Basile Finishes with Season-High 23 points but Women's Basketball Falls to Manhattanville
WILKES-BARRE –
Cara Basile (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) finished with her highest point total this season, 23, but the Wilkes University women's basketball team was defeated at home against Manhattanville College by a 67-57 final in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) action at the Marts Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Colonels fell to 3-16 overall and 0-8 in MAC Freedom play with the loss.
The Valiants were able to take the games first extended lead half way through the first quarter, when they went on an 8-0 run to take a 15-7 lead with 4:10 remaining in the quarter. Manhattanville pushed its lead to nine at 18-9 with 2:53 left. Wilkes then went on a run of its own, commencing a 7-0 run to cut the Valiants lead to two with 9:48 remaining in the second quarter. Manhattanville gave itself a little breathing room, but entered the half up 28-24.
The Valiants started the third quarter on a 12-2 run to reach the largest lead of the game, 14, at 40-26 with 6:23 left in the quarter. The Lady Colonels chipped away at the lead, fighting back to make the score 49-40 at the end of three.
Wilkes was able to cut the lead to four points midway through the fourth quarter, but was unable to mount the comeback as Manhattanville finished the game on an 8-2 run.
The Lady Colonels were led by Basile, who finished with a season and game-high 23 points on 55 percent (6-for-11) shooting, and 11-of-12 from the free throw line. Basile also pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
The Valiants were led by Ashley Raaf, who totaled 22 points and seven rebounds. Manhattanville was also led by Candice Scott-Mason and Joiada Darnell, who finished with 10 points each.
Wilkes returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Eastern University for a 6 p.m. MAC Freedom matchup.
