Wilkes Men's Basketball Falls in Scotty Wood Finals to Muhlenberg 80-70

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Wilkes University men's basketball team fell by an 80-70 final in the championship game of the Scotty Wood Tournament to Muhlenberg College in Allentown on Saturday evening.

The Colonels fell to 2-1 on the season with the defeat.

Wilkes got off to a fast start on the evening with back-to-back three pointers from Marcus Robinson (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional) and Connor Evans (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse), but Muhlenberg battled back to tie the score at six with 14:56 on the clock.

With the Colonels leading 17-16 and over 10 minutes until halftime, Wilkes went on a 14-6 run to push its lead to 31-22 with 5:46 left in the half, its largest lead of the game, capped by a three-pointer from Evans.

The Mules finished the half on 16-5 run to take a 38-36 lead into the half.

The Colonels took a 43-42 lead following a good free throw by Tommy Bowen (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) before Muhlenberg used a 13-3 run spanning almost five minutes to take a 55-46 lead with 12:06 left in the game. The Mules pushed the lead to 15 at 68-53 with 4:30 left on the clock, and their lead would not fall below 10 for the remainder of the game.

Evans led Wilkes on offense with a game and career-high 20 points to go with four rebounds. Robinson finished with 15 points on 5-8 shooting from beyond the three-point line, while Rob Pecorelli (Huntington, NY/Harborfields) contributed a career-high 11 points off the bench.

Jon Schreer led Muhlenberg with 19 points, while Brandon LaRose added 14 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. Erik Werheim (11 points, seven rebounds) and Nick Rindock (11 points) contributed off the bench to round out the scorers in double-figures.

Both Robinson and Evans were named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts.

The Colonels return to the court on Tuesday when they host Elizabethtown at the Marts Center beginning at 8 p.m.
