Rea Takes Second at 84th Annual Wilkes Open

Guesseppe Rea (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) finished in second place at 125-pounds to lead all Colonels wrestling at the 84
th annual Wilkes Open Thursday afternoon at the Marts Center.

Rea began the day with an 18-4 major decision in the round of 16 before wrestling through a tough 6-4 decision in the quarterfinals over Tommy Cox of North Carolina State. Rea used a late escape and takedown to seal the two-point decision win over Cox.
In the semifinals, Rea dominated Johnson Mai of Columbia cruising to an 8-2 decision to reach the finals and a chance at a Wilkes Open title.
In the finals Rea matched up with Gage Curry of American University. Rea trailed 4-1 following back-to-back takedowns from Curry after the first period. From there Curry scored two more points on an escape and riding time as Rea settled for runner-up in the weight class.
The Colonels remain idle through the Christmas holiday before returning to the mat January 7 competing in the North South Duals at 9:30 a.m. hosted by Ursinus College.
