Second Half Run leads Wilkes Men's Basketball to 79-64 Win over Clarks Summit
CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. – A 26-9 run through the first 10-plus minutes of the second half helped the Wilkes University men's basketball team snap a two-game losing streak in its 79-64 win at Clarks Summit University on Tuesday evening.
The Colonels improved to 5-3 with the victory.
Clarks Summit shot out to an early 7-2 win with two layups and a three-pointer, but with the game tied at 18 just over halfway through the first half, Wilkes finished the half on a 22-12 run to take a 40-30 lead into the break.
The Defenders recorded the first basket of the second half to cut the lead to 40-32, but the Colonels commenced on their 26-9 with the exclamation point a dunk by
Mark Mullins (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) to push the lead to 25 at 63-38 with 9:31 left in the game. Clarks Summit was able to cut the lead but never got closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
Tommy Bowen (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) led the way for Wilkes, finishing with 18 points.
Marcus Robinson (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional) recorded his second career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Kyron Jones led the Defenders with a game-high 25 points. John McCloskey finished with 11 points while Dontier Phillips added 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Colonels won the battle in the paint, outscoring Clarks Summit 36-18. Wilkes turned 14 Defender turnovers into 21 points compared to seven points off of turnovers for Clarks Summit, and the Colonels bench outscored Clarks Summit's bench 30-16.
Wilkes returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Carlisle, Pa. to take on Dickinson at 1 p.m. in non-conference action.
