Wizar Sets New Career High to Keep Men's Basketball's Postseason Hopes Alive

MADISON, N.J. – Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) went off for a career-high 33 points, making nine three-pointers, one away from the single game record, to help keep the Wilkes University men's basketball team's playoff hopes alive following its thrilling 90-84 victory at Fairleigh Dickinson University Florham Campus in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play on Tuesday evening.

The victory moves the Colonels to 12-12 overall and 7-6 in MAC Freedom play. Wilkes' win, coupled with Manhattanville's home loss to DeSales, moves the Colonels into sole possession of the final playoff spot with one game to go.

At 16:21 in the first half, Steve Stravinski (Pittston, PA/Pittston) hit a free-throw to give him his 1,000th point, making him the 31st player in program history to reach the plateau. Neither team was able to secure more than a five point lead through the first half of play, with Wilkes entering halftime up 40-35.

The Devils started the second half on an 8-0 run to take a 43-40 lead with 18:13 on the clock. Over the next 7:30, Wizar hit seven three pointers, igniting a 27-12 run to give the Colonels a 12 point lead at 67-55 with 11:33 remaining. Wilkes pushed its lead to 15 at 72-57 following a three-pointer from Stravinski with 10:10 in the game.

FDU-Florham then went on an 18-5 run to cut the Colonels lead to two at 77-75 with 4:43 in the half. The Colonels clung to an 86-84 lead with 22 seconds left in the game, but Wizar went four for five from the free throw line to end the game and give Wilkes the six point victory and the playoff hopes.

The Colonels were led by Wizar's 33 points. Stravinski finished with his fifth double-double of the season, totaling 18 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists, while Zachary Brunner (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) tied his season-high output with 17 points and six rebounds.

The Devils were led by Anthony Mitchell's 24 points and five assists. Charlie Slack added 17 points, while Veon Lassiter (14 points, nine rebounds), and Tyler Christie (11 points) contributed double figures off the bench.

Wilkes concludes its regular season on Saturday afternoon when it will look to lock up the final playoff spot when it hosts cross-town rival King's College at 3 p.m. Saturday will also be senior day, where the four graduating Colonels will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
