Racanelli Takes Second at 157 to Earn NCAA Berth; Wilkes finishes 7th Overall at Mideast Regional
WILLIAMSPORT, PA –
Nicholas Racanelli (West Creek, NJ/Southern Regional) earned his first berth into the NCAA Championship Tournament finishing second at 157-ponds to lead four Colonels who placed in the top six at the 2016 Mideast Regional hosted by Lycoming College Sunday afternoon.
Full Results As a team, No. 17 Wilkes finished seventh overall at the event finishing with 56.5 total team points. Messiah claimed the title with 139 team points with Baldwin Wallace taking second at 109.5 and Brockport State third at 104 total team points.
Racanelli moved into the finals with a thrilling 3-1 sudden victory after a takedown over Ian Evans of Scranton to start his day. In the title bout, he was pinned by Thiel's Brett Beltz settling for second place and his first trip to the NCAA Championships.
Kyle Diesel (Westtown, NY/Minisink Valley) dropped a tough 5-0 decision to Dillen Decker of Heidelberg in the semifinals at 184-pounds before wrestling back to finish fifth with a 2-0 decision over Elizabethtown's Rocco Hladney in the fifth place bout.
Nicholas Dawson (Montoursville, PA/Montoursville) wrestled his way through the consolation bracket at 197-pounds with a 4-0 decision and fall before falling in the consolation seminfinals. Dawson earned a fifth place finish with a 5-2 decision over John Shoreter of York (Pa.).
Michael Fleck (Easton, PA/Wilson Area) rounded out the top-six finishers for Wilkes claiming a pair pf falls in the consolation rounds before receiving a medical forfeit in the fifth place bout to settle for sixth place at 125-pounds.
Racanelli will now travel to the NCAA Division III Championships on March 11 and 12 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
