Balanced Scoring Leads Wilkes Women's Basketball to First MAC Freedom Win Over Misericordia 64-61
DALLAS, PA –
Jamie Campbell (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) led three Lady Colonels in double figures scoring a team-high 14 points as Wilkes University picked up its first MAC Freedom win 64-61 at local rival Misericordia University Saturday afternoon at the Anderson Center.
With the victory Wilkes improves to 4-17 overall and stands 1-9 in conference games. Misericordia drops to 6-15 overall and 2-8 in MAC Freedom games.
The teams traded baskets throughout the first quarter before Wilkes opened a five point lead thanks to three-pointers from
Catey McFadden (Doylestown, PA/Archbishop Wood) and
Emily Sofranko (Jim Thorpe, PA/Marian Catholic). Wilkes led 18-13 after one quarter.
After Misericordia cut the Wilkes lead down to one midway through the second quarter, a trey from Campbell and jumper from McFadden pushed the Lady Colonel advantage back to five at 36-31 with just over a minute left until the break. McFadden punctuated the lead for Wilkes hitting another deep three-pointer to give Wilkes a 39-31 lead at the half.
Wilkes continued its lead throughout the third quarter and held a slim two-point advantage early in the fourth before a three-point play and transition layup gave the hosts its first lead since early in the first quarter at 57-55.
Haley Mesaros (Royersford, PA/Pope John Paul II) canned a key jumper with 1:38 on the clock to give Wilkes a 62-61 lead before McFadden sealed the road win sinking two free throws with six second left to preserve the 64-61 victory.
Sofranko joined Campbell in double figures finishing with 13 points while McFadden posted 12 points and five rebounds. The Wilkes defense was also key in the win forcing 26 Misericordia turnovers leading to 22 points.
Japriya Carroll led the Cougars with 17 points and five rebounds. Justine Seely added 11 points and a game-high 15 rebounds in the defeat.
Wilkes looks to make it two straight wins in the league hosting DeSales University Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at the Marts Center.
