FT. PIERCE, Fl. – Three Wilkes University pitchers combined for eight strikeouts and scattered eight hits while surrendering only one unearned run to lead the Colonels to a 2-1 victory over Widener University in Ft. Pierce on Friday morning.

Wilkes improved to 5-4 on the season with the victory.

Widener scored first in the top of the second on two hits and two errors, leading to its only run of the game being unearned.

The Colonels tied the game in the bottom of the second on three hits. Junior James Brown (Covington, PA/North Pocono) led off the inning with a single and advanced to third when freshman Jack Fischer (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) singled up the middle. Fischer then stole second, allowing Brown to steal home and tie the game at one.

Wilkes took the lead in the bottom of the sixth when sophomore Jarret Clymer (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) led off with a triple to left field and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brown to take a 2-1 lead.

Colonels' pitching stifled the Pride's bats for the rest of the game to secure the victory.

Wilkes junior starter Quinn Kelly (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) went 5+ innings, giving up five hits and just the unearned run while walking four and striking out four. Junior Forrest Jordan (Sullivan County, PA/Sullivan County) entered and pitched the next three innings and gave up three hits with one strikeout to earn his second win of the season. Junior Matt Kaster (Traben-Trabach, Germany/Crestwood) struck out three batters in the ninth to earn his first save of the season.

The Colonels finish their spring trip tomorrow morning when they face Hilbert College at 9:30 a.m.
