Reese's Walk-Off Single Lifts Wilkes Baseball Past Penn College

KINGSTON - Junior Matthew Reese (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro)'s two out single in the bottom of the ninth drove in the only run of the game to lead the Wilkes University baseball team past Penn College of Technology by a 1-0 score at Artillery Park on Tuesday afternoon.

The Colonels improved to 8-7 with the win.

Neither team generated many scoring chances as pitching dominated the game. Wilkes loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, but a sharp grounder hit by sophomore Joe Champi (Dupont, PA/Pittston) was picked by Penn College's shortstop who stepped on second base to end the inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, junior Joshua Slocum (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) led off with a pinch-hit double to left field and was pinch-ran for by freshman Alex Palmer (Shrewsbury, PA/Susquehanncok). Following a strike out and a fly out, Reese stepped up and laced a single to left that was bobbled by the left fielder, but Palmer was running the whole way to come home with the winning run.

Junior Matt Kaster (Traben-Trabach, Germany/Crestwood) pitched two-thirds of an inning to earn his first win of the season. Junior Johnny Jan Jr. (Germantown, MD/Northwest) pitched seven scoreless innings surrendering three hits and two walks while striking out three batters.

Reese led the Colonels at the plate, going 3-5 with one rbi and a stolen base.

Wilkes returns to action on Thursday when it will travel to Delaware Valley for a 3:30 p.m. MAC Freedom game.
