Poor Defense Dooms Wilkes Baseball in Loss against Keystone
KINGSTON – Four errors contributed to four unearned runs crossing the plate as the Wilkes University baseball team saw its five game win streak snapped in an 8-3 loss to Keystone at Artillery Park on Wednesday afternoon.
The Colonels fell to 12-8 with the loss.
Wilkes scored the first run in the bottom of the second when sophomore
Joe Champi (Dupont, PA/Pittston) tripled to right center to start the inning and was driven home on a sacrifice fly to left field off the bat of junior
Matthew Reese (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro).
Keystone plated three runs in the top of the fourth on two hits, an error, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch to take a 3-1 lead.
The Colonels tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on two hits and a walk. Junior
Dan Eicher (Massapequa Park, NY/Kellenberg) ripped his first home run to cut the Giants lead to one. After a strikeout, sophomore
Jarret Clymer (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) drew a two-out walk, stole second, and was driven in by junior
James Brown (Covington, PA/North Pocono)'s double to left center to tie the score at three.
Keystone responded in the top of the sixth with five runs on five hits and two errors to finish the scoring and take an 8-3 lead.
Wilkes threatened in the bottom of the seventh, getting runners to second and third with one out, but were unable to drive in the runs.
Senior
Forrest Jordan (Sullivan County, PA/Sullivan County) gave up five runs (two earned) in 1.2 innings to fall to 2-2 on the season.
Champi led the Colonels at the plate going 2-for-3 with two triples, one walk, and one run scored.
Wilkes returns to action on Friday when it will travel to DeSales for a 3:30 p.m. MAC Freedom game.
