Wilkes Softball Drops Doubleheader with Moravian
EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University softball team committed six errors in two games as it dropped both games of its doubleheader with Moravian College, dropping the first game 6-1 before falling in the finale 4-1.
The Lady Colonels are now 6-12 on the season.
Wilkes got on the board first in the first game, as junior
Mikala Strum (Grass Valley, CA/Nevada Union) launched the first home run in her Lady Colonel career in the bottom of the first to give Wilkes a 1-0 lead.
Moravian responded in the top of the second on one hit, one walk, one hit-by-pitch, and two errors to take a 2-1 lead.
The Greyhounds added another run in the top of the third on two hits and one error, scoring the run on a wild pitch.
Moravian finished the scoring in the top of the sixth on three hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch for three runs to take a 6-1 lead.
Sophomore
Christina Gambino (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) surrendered six runs (four earned) on seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts to fall to 1-5 on the season.
Sophomore
Sarah Birchmeier (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East), Strum, sophomore
Grace Sanzalone (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingstone), and junior
Ally Paskas (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) each had one hit for the Lady Colonels.
In the second game, Wilkes scored in the bottom of the first on a single to left by Paskas that drove in Sanzalone.
The Greyhounds answered in the second, scoring two runs on two hits and an error to take a 2-1 lead. Moravian added the final two runs in the top of the fifth on a two-run home run.
Sophomore
Nicole Cumbo (Wyoming, PA/Wyoming Area) surrendered four runs on 11 hits with two walks and three strikeouts to fall to 3-4 on the season.
Paskas and Cumbo each had a hit for the Lady Colonels.
Wilkes returns to action on Saturday when it will travel to DeSales for a 1 p.m. MAC Freedom doubleheader.
