Wilkes Women's Lacrosse Edges Old Westbury 14-13
EDWARDSVILLE –
Madeleine Brownsey (Glenside, PA/St. Basil Academy) and
Jessyca Held (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) combined for 10 of Wilkes' 14 goals leading the Lady Colonels to a 14-13 victory over visiting Old Westbury College Thursday night at Schmidt Stadium.
With the win Wilkes improves to 7-2 overall while Old Westbury drops to 2-5 on the season.
Brownsey put Wilkes on top early scoring five of Wilkes seven first half goals. Old Westbury answered after being down 7-2 scoring five unanswered goals tying the game at 7-7 at the break.
Wilkes broke open the tie early in the second half scoring the frames first three goals as Held notched two strikes and
Melanie Rivera (Middletown, NY/Middletown) added the third to give the Lady Colonels a 10-7 advantage with 23:50 remaining.
Tori Kerr (Beacon, NY/Beacon) added a goal four minutes later to keep Wilkes ahead 11-9.
Kerr and Held went back-to-back to push the lead to 13-10 with just over ten minutes left.
Brownsey added her sixth goal of the game with 3:42 on the clock extending the lead to 14-11 before two Old Westbury goals kept things close. Wilkes won the final draw control and ran out the clock to seal the win over the final fifty seconds.
Brownsey led Wilkes with six goals while Held followed with four strikes. Kerr added two goals and two assists in the win.
Tabitha Gravius (Howell, NJ/Manalapan) recorded the win in net for Wilkes finishing with 11 saves. Ashley Gugliuzzo made ten stops for Old Westbury.
Wilkes begins MAC Freedom play next Saturday, April 9 when the Lady Colonels travel to Doylestown, Pa. for a matchup with Delaware Valley University at 1:00 p.m.
