Leaf Strikes Out Ten Batters in Win over Geneva
FT. PIERCE, Fl. – Starting pitcher
Marcus Leaf (Reading, PA/Berks Catholic) scattered four hits, surrendering one run over 6.2 innings with four walks and striking out 10 batters to lead the Wilkes university baseball team to a 4-1 victory over Geneva College on Wednesday evening in Ft. Pierce, Florida.
The Colonels stopped a three-game skid with the win, improving to 3-4 on the season.
Wilkes got on the board in the fourth inning using two hits and a stolen base to take a 1-0 lead.
James Brown (Covington, PA/North Pocono) hit a one-out single to left field, promptly stole second, and came around to score on
Sam Eyler (York, PA/West York)'s infield single.
Geneva responded in the bottom of the fourth on two hits, one walk, and one stolen base to tie the score at one.
In the top of the fifth, the Colonels took the lead for good, scoring three runs on five hits with four stolen bases.
Nicholas Capozzi (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers) led off the inning with a walk and was pinch-run for by
Ramon Bazan (Reading, PA/Reading). Michael Wozniak followed with a single advancing Bazan to second.
Matthew Reese (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro) grounded into a fielder's choice to force Wozniak at second, advancing Bazan to third. Reese then stole second, and both runners came around to score on
Ryan Herbst (East Islip, NY/St. John the Baptist) single to right to give Wilkes a 3-1 lead.
Jarret Clymer (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) then singled to right to advance Herbst to second, and Herbst came around to score on
Joe Champi (Dupont, PA/Pittston)'s single to left to finish the scoring.
Leaf was followed on the mound by
Matt Kaster (Traben-Trabach, Germany/Crestwood), who continued his dominance this season by striking out four batters over 1.1 innings.
Patrick Condo (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) followed by striking out the side in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.
Wilkes was led at the plate by Herbst, Clymer, Brown, and Wozniak, who finished with two hits each.
The Colonels return to action tomorrow when they face Hilbert College at 4 p.m.
