Wilkes Baseball Pounds Out 17 Hits in 10-4 Win over PSU-Berks
KINGSTON – The Wilkes University baseball team pounded out 17 hits, including six for extra bases, in its 10-4 win over Penn State-Berks at Artillery Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Colonels improved to 15-12 with the victory.
Wilkes jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as freshman
Brady Wing (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) led off with a double, and advanced to third on a throwing error by the third baseman. Sophomore
Jarret Clymer (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) followed with a walk, and advanced to second on a passed ball. Sophomore
Joe Champi (Dupont, PA/Pittston) singled to drive in Wing and stole second to put runners at second and third with one out. Senior
Ryan Herbst (East Islip, NY/St. John the Baptist) then laced a double to left-center to drive in both Clymer and Champi. The Colonels added on another run in the bottom of the third when freshman
Jack Fischer (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Herbst, and increased the lead to 5-0 when freshman
Matt Dacey (Mountaintop, PA/Holy Redeemer) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Wing.
Penn State-Berks made the score 5-1in the top of the fifth, scoring on two walks, a sacrifice fly, and a groundout.
Wilkes increased its lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fifth when freshman
Sam Eyler (York, PA/West York) drew a one-out walk and came around to score on Fischer's double down the left field line. The Colonels added another run in the bottom of the sixth when Champi hit a one-out sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Clymer.
Wilkes scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Fischer hit a one out single, and advanced to third on a perfectly executed hit-and-run single to right off the bat of freshman
Keaton Allison (Aiken, SC/Aiken). Allison was then pinch-run for by freshman
Jorge Gonzalez (Reading, PA/Conrad Weiser), who stole second, with Fischer scoring on a throwing error by the catcher. Sophomore
Michael Wozniack (Plains, PA/James M. Coughlin) followed with a double down the right-field line to drive in Gonzalez and increase the lead to 9-1.
Penn State-Berks cut the lead to 9-2 in the top of the eighth on two hits.
The Colonels scored their 10
th run in the bottom of the eighth when Champi hit a lead-off home run to left-center field.
Penn State-Berks attempted to mount a comeback in the top of the ninth, scoring two runs on three hits, but Wilkes was able to shut the door.
Senior
Marcus Leaf (Reading, PA/Berks Catholic) pitched the first three innings, giving up two hits and one walk while striking out four batters. Junior
Quinn Kelly (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) earned his first win of the season, pitching the next three innings and surrendering one run on one hit with four walks and one strikeout.
Wing, Clymer, and Champi each had four hits for the Colonels, with Champi driving in three runs and scoring two. Fischer finished 2-for-3 with two rbi's and one run scored while Wozniack was 2-for-4 with one rbi.
Wilkes returns to action tomorrow when it will host Scranton for a 4 p.m. non-conference game at Artillery Park.
