Wilkes Baseball Wins Thriller in Game One, Bats Fall Silent in Game Two against DeSales
KINGSTON – The Wilkes University baseball team won a thrilling 5-4 victory in game one before falling ice cold at the plate in an 18-0 game two loss in its Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom doubleheader against DeSales University on Saturday afternoon at Artillery Park.
The Colonels are now 13-10 overall and 4-5 in MAC Freedom play after the split.
Sophomore
Jarret Clymer (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) got Wilkes off to a fast start in game one, leading off the bottom of the first with his first home run of the season. Following two walks, junior
Joshua Slocum (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) laced an rbi double into the gap in right-center field. After another walk to load the bases, junior
Dan Eicher (Massapequa Park, NY/Kellenberg) hit a two-run single to left field that gave the Colonels a 4-0 lead after one.
DeSales got on the board in the top of the third, scoring two runs on three hits, and tied the game at four in the top of the fourth on two hits and a run-scoring wild pitch.
Wilkes took advantage of a costly Bulldogs mistake in the bottom of the sixth when junior
Alex Kramer (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) came up to the plate with two outs and two runners on and hit a groundball that the DeSales shortstop couldn't handle, loading the bases for Clymer who walked to drive in what turned out to be the winning run.
Junior
Matt Kaster (Traben-Trabach, Germany/Crestwood) pitched the final 3.1 innings giving up one hit and no runs with one walk and three strikeouts to improve to 3-0 this season.
Clymer and Eicher led the Colonels at the plate in the first game with each going 1-for-3 with two rbi's.
In game two, the Bulldogs scored in the first, third, fourth, fifth, and seventh en route to an 18-0 victory.
Sophomore
Jeff Roedell (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) surrendered three runs (one earned) on three hits with one walk in his one inning of work to fall to 0-1 on the season.
Wilkes returns to action on Tuesday when it will travel to the University of Scranton for a 4 p.m. non-conference matchup.
