MADISON, N.J. – Junior Quinn Kelly (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) threw a complete game shutout in game one of the doubleheader as the Wilkes University baseball team won game one 3-0 before dropping game two 6-3 on Saturday afternoon with Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom-for Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham.

The Colonels are now 18-17 overall and 7-11 in MAC Freedom play.

All of the scoring in game one happened in the top of third on two hits, a hit-by-pitch, and a walk. Freshman Brady Wing (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) leg off the inning with a double to right-center. Sophomore Jarret Clymer (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) was hit by a pitch and junior Matthew Reese (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro) walked to load the bases with nobody out. Sophomore Joe Champi (Dupont, PA/Pittston) drove home Wing and Clymer with a single to right center that moved Reese to third, and Reese came in to score on a sacrifice fly from senior Ryan Herbst (East Islip, NY/St. John the Baptist).

The Devils loaded the bases in the bottom of the first, but Kelly was never in much trouble after that, giving up four hits and four walks with two strikeouts.

Junior James Brown (Covington, PA/North Pocono) led the Colonels at the plate, finishing game one 2-for-3.

Wilkes got on the board in the top of the second in game two, using a Wing single and an rbi double by freshman Jack Fischer (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) to take a 1-0 lead.  The Colonels added another run in the top of the third when Reese led off with a single and moved to third on a single by Clymer, who advanced to second on the throw to third. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Joshua Slocum (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) to give the Colonels a 2-0 lead.

FDU-Florham scored four runs in the bottom of the third on five hits, one error, and one walk to take a 4-2 lead.

Wilkes added another run in the top of the fourth on two hits. Fischer hit a one-out single and stole second, coming around to score on a single by sophomore Nick Preston (Duryea, PA/Scranton Prep) and cut the deficit to 4-3.

The Devils finished the scoring in the bottom of the fifth with two runs on two hits and two errors to take a 6-3 lead.

Herbst (2-for-4), Fischer (2-for-3, one rbi, one run), and Preston (2-for-3, one rbi) led the Colonels at the plate in game two.

Junior Johnny Jan Jr. (Germantown, MD/Northwest) pitched the first 4.1 innings, surrendering five runs (four earned) on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Wilkes returns to action on Friday when it will travel to Misericordia for a 3:30 p.m. MAC Freedom game.
