Wilkes Baseball Drops Senior Day Doubleheader, 6-4 and 8-5
KINGSTON – The Wilkes University baseball team fought hard but dropped both ends of its final Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom doubleheader against Misericordia University on Saturday afternoon at Artillery Park, falling 6-4 in the first game before dropping the second game 8-5 following a ceremony to honor the four graduating seniors.
The Colonels are now 18-20 overall and finish MAC Freedom play 7-14.
In game one, Misericordia opened the scoring in the top of the second on an rbi single and a stolen base that allowed a run to come home.
Wilkes got on the board in the bottom of the third when freshman
Jack Fischer (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) lined a one out single to center field, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and sophomore
Joe Champi (Dupont, PA/Pittston) launched his sixth home run of the season to tie the score at two.
The Cougars retook the lead with three runs in the top of the fifth on two hits and three walks to make the score 5-2, and added another run in the top of the sixth on two walks, two hits, and a hit-by-pitch.
The Colonels attempted to mount a comeback in the bottom of the sixth on one hit and three walks. Champi led off the inning with a double down the left field line, and was followed by walks to sophomore
Jarret Clymer (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) and junior
Matthew Reese (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro) to load the bases. Junior
Joshua Slocum (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) drove in a run with an rbi hit-by-pitch, and freshman
Matt Dacey (Mountaintop, PA/Holy Redeemer) walked to drive in another run and make the score 6-4.
Junior
Quinn Kelly (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) took the loss falling to 2-4 on the season, pitching 5.0 innings and giving up five earned runs on five hits with six walks and one strikeout.
Champi led Wilkes at the plate, accounting for half of the Colonels four hits in game one. Champi finished 2-for-4 with two rbi and two run's scored.
The Colonels got on the board first in game two with two runs in the bottom of the second. Freshman
Sam Eyler (York, PA/West York) drew a one out walk and following a fly out, stole second. Freshman
Keaton Allison (Aiken, SC/Aiken) then stepped up and launched a no-doubter to left field for his first career home run.
Misericordia didn't let the lead stand long, scoring two runs in the top of the third on one hit, one walk, and one hit-by-pitch.
Wilkes retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Allison hit his second home run of the game to straight away centerfield to make the score 3-2.
The Cougars scored four runs in the top of the sixth on five hits and a hit batter to take a 6-3 lead.
The Colonels loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth on a walk to Champi and consecutive singles by junior
James Brown (Covington, PA/North Pocono) and Eyler. Dacey pinch hit and drove in one run with a single, but Wilkes was unable to score anymore runs in the game.
Senior
Marcus Leaf (Reading, PA/Berks Catholic) fell to 1-3 in his final start, pitching 5.1 innings and surrendering six earned runs on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts.
Allison led the Colonels at the plate in game two, finishing 2-for-3 with three rbi's and two runs scored on his two home runs. Herbst finished 3-for 4 in his final home game.
Wilkes returns to action on Tuesday when it will travel to Scranton for a 4 p.m. non-conference game.
