No. 16 Wilkes Wrestling Goes 3-1 at North South Duals
 
COLLEGEVILLE, PA – The No. 16 Wilkes University wrestling team finished 3-1 including a win over No. 14 Delaware Valley University at the North South Duals hosted by Ursinus College Saturday afternoon.
 
The Colonels opened the tournament with a 24-21 over Division II Shippensburg followed by another 24-21 victory over Camden County College in round two. In a battle of two nationally ranked teams, Wilkes bested its MAC for Delaware Valley 25-13 before concluding the duals with 31-6 defeat against Cortland.
 
In the Colonels 24-21 win over Shippensburg, Denzel Tovar (Wall, NJ/Wall) began the match with a 2-1 decision over Dustin Steffenino to give Wilkes a 3-0 lead. After a Shippensburg pin at 133, Matthew Grossmann (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) earned a 6-2 decision over Mike Hafer to tie the match at 6. John Ritter (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) pinned his opponent in 1:30 at 157 to give Wilkes a 12-9 lead before Justin Morel (Corona, NY/Mt. St. Michael Academy) pinned Hunter Fenk in 2:45 to push the advantage to 18-12 after seven bouts. The Colonels received a forfeit at 184 to seal the victory with Shippensburg taking the final two bouts at 197 and 285 to conclude the match.
 
In the win against Camden County, Tovar secured his second straight win with a major decision (12-3) at 125. Edwin Fiscal (Bogota, NJ/Bogota) continued the scoring with a technical fall at 133 followed by pins from Cory Fleming (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris) and Kyle Medrow (West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson) at 141 and 149 respectfully. Ashton Gyenizs (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) went 6-1 at 157 to round out the Wilkes winners in the bout.
 
In the highly-anticipated match of two ranked teams against DVU, Wilkes stormed out to a 12-3 lead halfway through the match. Decision wins from Tovar, Pankil Chander (Cedarhurst, NY/Lawrence), Medrow and Ritter put the Colonels out ahead for good. Michael Paskas (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) secured a 9-3 win over Brandon Rudy before a decision win (4-0) from Jacob Brook (Layton, NJ/Kittatiny) and Delaware Valley forfeit at 197 rounded out the Colonels scoring.
 
Grossmann was the lone winner in the defeat against Cortland pinning Chris Cataldo in 4:48 for his second win of the day.
 
Wilkes returns to the mat Tuesday traveling to Centenary College for a dual match at 7:00 p.m. in Hackettstown, NJ.
