Wilkes Field Hockey Upended 3-1 in Regular Season Finale
EDWARDSVILLE – After falling behind early, Misericordia University scored three unanswered goals to capture the regular season finale against the Wilkes University field hockey team at Schmidt Stadium on Thursday evening by a 3-1 final.
The Lady Colonels finished the regular season 4-3 in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom play and 8-9 overall.
Wilkes got the home crowd in a frenzy just one minute and 34 seconds into the contest when
Marissa Surdy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) passed across the circle to
Ali Dunn (Pittston, PA/Pittston) who knocked it home for the early 1-0 lead.
The lead held for the next 19 minutes before the Cougars tied the game in the 21
st minute.
Misericordia added goals in the 28
th and 42
nd minutes.
The Lady Colonels put forth a frenzied comeback effort starting in the 63
rd minute with five penalty corners and two shots over a three minute period but Misericordia goalkeeper Katelyn Campbell and the defense was up to the task, denying each attempt.
Wilkes led the contest with 10 penalty corners to the Cougars' six.
Dallas Kendra (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) made five saves for the Lady Colonels.
Wilkes has claimed the No. 3 seed in the upcoming MAC Freedom Tournament, and will head to Misericordia on Wednesday for the semifinals at a time yet to be determined.
