Wilkes Women's Volleyball Closes Season with Home Tri-Match Sweep

WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's volleyball team ended its season with a tri-match sweep of Rutgers-Camden and Utica College inside the Marts Center Saturday. The Lady Colonels took the match against Rutgers-Camden by a 3-1 score and finished the day with a 3-0 victory over Utica.

With the wins Wilkes brought its overall record to 10-21 for the season.

The Lady Colonels avenged a 3-2 loss earlier this season to Rutgers-Camden (16-15) by taking the four-set victory with set scores of 25-22, 25-20, 17-25, and 25-22.

The Scarlet Raptors led 20-16 in the first set but the Lady Colonels closed on a 9-2 run to take it 25-22. Kills by senior Kayley Schinski (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) and sophomore Jamey Mikovich (Nesquehoning, PA/Panther Valley) closed out the set. Wilkes used a five-point run when trailing 7-6 in the second set to take an 11-7 lead. From there Wilkes closed out the set to win 25-20. Rutgers-Camden would take the third set 25-17 but Wilkes responded in the fourth set by jumping out to an 8-3 lead. With the score tied at 20 Wilkes scored the next three points on a Schinski ace, a Scarlet Raptors error, and a Mikovich kill. A kill from senior Madison Scarfaro (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) ended the set at 25-22 and also ended the match.

Senior Alexis Morgan (Walnutport, PA/Northampton) recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 36 assists and 11 digs. Mikovich led the Lady Colonels with 12 kills and Scarfaro added 11. Sophomore Michele Natale (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) tied her career-high with seven kills. Schinski had three aces and three blocks. Junior Shayna Fehrle (Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert) and sophomore Juliet Betke (Poplar Grove, IL/Belvidere North) each had eight digs while freshman Erin Silverman (Cooper City, FL/Cooper City) added five.

Wilkes closed the season with its best hitting performance as a team to defeat Utica (7-23) in straight sets. The Lady Colonels turned in a season-best .305 hitting percentage on 39 kills with seven errors on 105 total attacks.

With the first set tied at nine Wilkes finished on a 16-5 run to take the set 25-14. Two kills by sophomore Alex Ferrier (Cressona, PA/Blue Mountain) in the five-point run that started the surge were key along with a Betke ace. After taking the 2-1 lead in set two the Lady Colonels never looked back and Mikovich provided the kill to end the set at 25-18. Wilkes then jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the third set on its way to finish off the Pioneers 25-16 on a Scarfaro kill.

Mikovich recorded her 15th double-double of the season with 13 kills and 11 digs. Ferrier added eight kills and freshman Christie Challenger (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Blue Mountain) recorded four kills to tie for her second-best total of the season. Betke led the Wilkes defense with 17 digs.

Morgan dished out 31 assists, Scarfaro had seven kills, and Schinski tied a career-high with four aces in their final matches for Wilkes.

Mikovich finished her sophomore season with 373 kills to place her fourth on the single-season kills list at Wilkes.
