Another Shutout for Wilkes Women's Soccer in 2-0 Victory at Stockton
GALLOWAY, N.J. – For the fourth consecutive game the Wilkes University women's soccer team did not allow a goal as it defeated Stockton University 2-0 Tuesday evening in non-conference action.
Goals by senior
Micaela Oliverio (Carlisle, PA/Trinity) and senior
Ema Sabovic (Brodheadsville, PA/Pleasant Valley) were enough to provide the victory behind another rock solid defensive effort by the Lady Colonels.
Earlier in the day it was announced that Wilkes moved up to No. 8 in the United Soccer Coaches Mid-Atlantic Poll and now have a 7-1-2 record on the season. They are 1-0-0 in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom games. Stockton fell to 3-8-1 overall.
The game's first goal came at the 30:23 mark when a giveaway by the Ospreys defense led to a tap in goal by Oliverio just over one minute after she subbed into the game. It was her second goal of the season and the 15
th of her career.
The Lady Colonels stretched the lead to 2-0 in the 55
th minute after a foul in the box by the Stockton goalkeeper gave Wilkes a penalty kick. Sabovic buried the opportunity for her third goal of the season and the fifth of her career.
Junior
Courtney Stanley (Yardville, NJ/Steinert) made four saves including three in the second half to help preserve the sixth shutout in the last seven games for Wilkes. It was Courtney's fifth shutout of the season.
The Lady Colonels saw a 143 minute stretch without allowing a shot attempt end in the 33
rd minute. They moved to 3-1-0 on the road this season.
Wilkes held the 10 to seven shots advantage and also led six to four in shots on goal and three to two in corner kicks.
The Lady Colonels return to Schmidt Stadium for their second MAC Freedom game of the season when they host FDU-Florham on Friday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m.
