Scarfaro's Career Night Leads Wilkes Women's Volleyball over Marywood 3-1
WILKES-BARRE – A career-high 16 kills from senior
Madison Scarfaro (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) led the Wilkes University women's volleyball team to a 3-1 win over visiting Marywood University in non-conference action at the Marts Center Monday night. The Lady Colonels won the match with set scores of 25-20, 25-19, 21-25, and 25-21 to run their season-best win streak to three matches.
Wilkes used a season-best .236 hitting percentage as a team to move to 7-15 overall. Marywood fell to 5-14.
The Lady Colonels utilized a three-point run to extend their lead to 17-12 in the first set when Scarfaro had a kill, the Pacers had an attack error, and senior
Kayley Schinski (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) had an ace. The lead never slipped to less than three points from there and Scarfaro ended the set with a kill at 25-20.
Wilkes went on a six point run to take control of the second set when the score was knotted at 17. In the run sophomore
Jamey Mikovich (Nesquehoning, PA/Panther Valley) had two kills, sophomore
Alex Ferrier (Cressona, PA/Blue Mountain) had a kill and combined for a block with Schinski, and senior
Alexis Morgan (Walnutport, PA/Northampton) had an ace. A Schinski kill and Ferrier ace ended the set at 25-19.
The Pacers would deny a Lady Colonels sweep by taking the third set by a score of 25-21.
The fourth set was a back-and-forth affair until Wilkes scored five of the final six points. With the score tied at 20 Ferrier provided the go-ahead kill. Two consecutive Morgan aces would end the set and match at 25-21 and 3-1 respectively.
Scarfaro hit at a .341 clip to set her career-high with 16 kills. Morgan dished out 43 assists and tied a season-high with four aces. Schinski tied a career-high with four aces and added six kills and two blocks.
Mikovich recorded her tenth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 15 digs. She also had two blocks. Ferrier had 10 kills, sophomore
Juliet Betke (Poplar Grove, IL/Belvidere North) led the team with 17 digs, and sophomore
Julie Murphy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) added seven digs.
The Lady Colonels return to Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom action on Wednesday, October 11 when they host conference leader DeSales University inside the Marts Center at 7:00 p.m. Wilkes is currently 0-4 in MAC Freedom games on the season.
