Wilkes Wrestling Goes 1-2 at NY/PA Duals
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University wrestling team finished 1-2 at the NY/PA Duals held at the Marts Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Colonels fell 23-20 to No. 11 SUNY Cortland and 34-6 to NYU before posting a 38-6 victory over Hunter in its final match of the day.
In the win against Hunter
Kyle Trout (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) earned a major decision 15-6 at 125-pounds before
Jake Dimarsico (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) went 9-2 at 133-pounds.
Matthew Grossmann (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) secured a fall in the first period followed by
Kyle Medrow (West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson)'s 8-0 major decision at 149-pounds.
Nicholas Racanelli (West Creek, NJ/Southern Regional) wrestled to a 9-3 decision win at 165-pounds and Wilkes secured three extra-point wins at 184, 197 and 285-pounds to seal the victory.
Justin Morel (Corona, NY/Mt. St. Michael Academy) and
Jacob Huling (Jersey Shore, PA/Jersey Shore) each recorded falls at 184 and 197 and
Nicholas Goff (Jamesburg, NJ/Monroe Twp.) took a forfeit at heavyweight to end the match.
Grossmann and Racanelli were the two Wilkes winners against NYU as the Colonels accounted for six team points on two decision wins.
Cortland jumped out to a 6-0 lead after one bout before Dimarsico earned an 8-5 win at 133. Grossmann gave Wilkes its first lead at 7-6 after claiming a 10-1 major decision at 141 and Medrow added to the advantage with a fall in 2:18 at 149 as the Colonels led 13-6 after four bouts. Cortland responded taking two decisions at 157 and 174 in between a Racanelli major decision (14-4) at 165. A Cortland decision at 174 followed by back-to-back extra-point wins at 184 and 197 pushed the Red Dragons ahead for good. Goff finished the match with a 1-0 decision at heavyweight.
Wilkes returns to the mat next Saturday competing at the Mount Union Duals in Alliance, OH.
