Wilkes Women's Soccer's Historic Season Ends with 2-0 Loss at #11 Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Wilkes University women's soccer team ended its historic season in which it advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer tournament for the first time with a loss to the #11-nationally ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays in Baltimore on Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Colonels finish the 2017 season with a 14-4-3 record, which is the second highest win total in program history.

Johns Hopkins controlled play for most of the first 45 minutes, gaining nine shots with three hitting the target. Wilkes had spurts of possession with chances deep in the Blue Jays half of the field but were unable to generate any shots in the initial half.

The Lady Colonels got their first shot of the game in the 47th minute when Shelby Trumbo (Landingville, PA/Schuylkill Haven) played a free ball into the box that bounced around before Micaela Oliverio (Carlisle, PA/Trinity) sent a shot high.

The Blue Jays broke the scoreless tie in the 50th minute when a corner kick was sent in that goalkeeper Courtney Stanley (Yardville, NJ/Steinert) punched out but directly to an unmarked Johns Hopkins player who headed it into the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Blue Jays added a second goal in the 59th minute on a ball played in from the midfield that skipped past two Lady Colonel defenders and gave Johns Hopkins a breakaway for a shot that was put into the upper right corner.

Stanley made a big play to keep the deficit at two in the 62nd minute when the Blue Jays played in a free ball from the right side about 20 yards out that was played into the box with Stanley punching it back out as a Johns Hopkins player was bearing down on the net.

Stanley turned the Blue Jays away again in the 66th minute on a shot that she was positioned perfectly to receive right into her stomach. Stanley again kept the deficit at two in the 67th minute on a shot that was played in from the right side into the middle to an open Johns Hopkins player who laced a shot with eyes for the lower right corner but Stanley made a remarkable diving save that was played out of the box by Niamh Harkins (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley).

Stanley made a career-high seven saves to keep the Lady Colonels in the contest.
