Robinson Leads Wilkes Men's Basketball by Penn State Wilkes-Barre
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University men's basketball team never trailed and remained unbeaten with a 74-65 win against Penn State Wilkes-Barre Tuesday night at the Marts Center. The Colonels were led by a season-high 19 points and eight rebounds from
Marcus Robinson (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional).
Wilkes is now 3-0 while Penn State Wilkes-Barre fell to 3-3.
The Colonels jumped out to a 10-2 lead 2:24 into the game after a
Zach Brunner (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) steal led to a
Landon Henry (Hughesville, PA/Hughesville) three in transition. The Lions would then use an 11-4 run to close the lead to 14-13 with 14:36 left in the first half.
Wilkes would regain control and built the game's largest lead with 1:09 left in the half when Robinson made a three-pointer to make it 42-28. The Colonels went into the half with a 44-33 lead.
Penn State Wilkes-Barre closed the Wilkes lead to two points 4:34 into the second half after going on a 12-3 run. The Lions would draw within one point at 53-52 with 12:28 remaining but the Colonels had a response when
Mason Gross (Pittston, PA/Pittston) made a layup off a pass from
Tommy Bowen (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin). Layups from Robinson and
Mark Mullins (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) then stretched the lead to 59-52 with 10:37 left.
The Colonels lead never went less than six points down the stretch as they finished the Lions off by a 74-65 score.
Robinson used 7-of-8 shooting from the floor and 3-of-4 from the foul line to score his 19 points.
Rob Pecorelli (Huntington, NY/Harborfields) added 16 points and six rebounds including going 10-of-12 on free-throws. Henry played a team high 34 minutes and recorded career highs in points (8), assists (4), and steals (3) from the point guard position. Brunner added 10 points to put three players in double figures for Wilkes and Bowen added four assists off the bench.
Penn State Wilkes-Barre was led by 13 points and five rebounds off the bench from Davaughn Roberts. Kevin Silverberg scored 12 points.
As a team Wilkes shot 24-of-44 for a 54.5 percent clip. The Colonels also shot 74.1 percent on 20-of-27 shooting from the foul line.
The Colonels are back on the court when they travel to Scranton, Pa. to play a pair of games this weekend in the Cross County Challenge. Wilkes faces Marywood University at 1:00 p.m. Saturday before playing the host school in the University of Scranton at 3:00 p.m. Sunday. Scranton was ranked No. 24 in the D3hoops.com Preseason Top 25.
