Moravian Upends Wilkes Women's Basketball 80-57
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Wilkes University women's basketball team was led by 10 points from
Gianna Roberts (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) but lost 80-57 at Landmark Conference foe Moravian College Thursday night.
Wilkes is now 2-3 this season and Moravian, who is receiving votes in the D3hoops.com Top 25, is 5-1.
The Greyhounds jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the first 3:37 of the game but the Lady Colonels responded with a 17-4 run to end the first quarter ahead 18-12.
Roberts made a layup to start the run and
Catey McFadden (Doylestown, PA/Archbishop Wood) followed with a three-pointer.
Gabby Smicherko (Edwardsville, PA/Wyoming Valley West) then made a layup and Roberts added a jumper to make the game 12-10. Roberts then gave the Lady Colonels their first lead after she converted a layup and the free-throw for a three-point play with 2:49 left in the quarter.
An
Alyssa Alfano (Dunmore, PA/Holy Cross) three and
Nicole Farrell (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren) jump shot then provided Wilkes with its largest lead of the game at 18-12.
Moravian would take the lead for good at 25-24 with 5:40 left in the half but a
Sierra Smith (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) three-pointer at the end of the second quarter sent the Lady Colonels into the halftime break trailing 37-31.
The Greyhounds lead would grow to as many as 29 points at the 6:13 mark of the fourth quarter. The Lady Colonels outscored the Greyhounds the rest of the way and led 17-15 on the fourth quarter scoreboard.
Roberts had 10 points and five rebounds and McFadden added nine points on 3-of-3 shooting from three-point range and five rebounds. Alfano scored seven points and dished out four assists.
Maddie Kelley (Dallas, PA/Dallas) scored a career-best six points and
Chelsea Erkes (Wernersville, PA/Conrad Weiser) added a season-best five points.
Wilkes shot 6-of-15 for a 40 percent clip from long distance.
Karlie Brogan scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Jennifer McClave also scored 13 points to lead the way for the Greyhounds.
The Lady Colonels kick off a stretch of four games in six days when they head to Rutgers-Newark on Monday, December 4 for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
