No. 4 Ithaca Takes Down No. 24 Wilkes Wrestling 34-12

ITHACA, N.Y. – Host No. 4 Ithaca College claimed wins in seven of ten bouts including six extra-point victories to post a 34-12 decision over No. 24 Wilkes University Friday night in Ben Light Gymnasium.

Wilkes saw its seven match win streak come to an end falling to 17-5 overall. Ithaca improved to 11-2 on the season including 3-0 in home dual matches.

The match began with a feature bout at 125-pounds as two top-ten wrestlers took center stage. Guesseppe Rea (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg), ranked second overall in the weight class, took on No. 8 Jimmy Kaishian. Rea jumped out to a 4-1 lead after one period before Kaishian battled back to trail 6-5 after two frames.  Rea began the third with an escape to take a two-point advantage, but Kaishian answered with a takedown to tie the match at 7-7 before turning Rea on his back for a near fall stealing the 9-7 decision with seconds remaining.

Pankil Chander (Cedarhurst, NY/Lawrence) tied the match at 3-3 following his 5-2 decision win over Tito Colom at 133-pounds. One bout later, Jessie Lopez (Everett, WA/Everett) remained tied at 2-2 with Chris Wymer before flipping Wymer onto his back finishing the pin in 6:43 as Wilkes led 9-3 after three bouts.

A technical fall for Ithaca at 149-pounds brought the hosts to within one at 9-8, but Nicholas Racanelli (West Creek, NJ/Southern Regional) held on for a low-scoring 5-3 sudden victory decision at 157-pounds to push the Colonel lead back to four up 12-8.

From there Ithaca rallied with four straight extra-point victories including back-to-back major decisions at 165 and 174 followed by back-to-back falls at 184 and 197 to seal the match. An Ithaca fall at heavyweight rounded out the Bombers scoring.

Up next Wilkes travels to Elizabethtown, Pa. Tuesday for a dual match against Elizabethtown College starting at 7:00 p.m.
