Wilkes Men's Lacrosse Earns Rain-Shortened First Victory since Program Rebirth 13-2 over Keystone

EDWARDSVILLE – Mother Nature wouldn't let the Wilkes University men's lacrosse team enjoy a full-length victory, but its 13-2 win in one half of play at Schmidt Stadium on Saturday afternoon over Keystone College will do.

The Colonels improved to 1-1 on the season with the win.

Wilkes wasted no time getting the scoring started when sophomore John Wink (Glenside, Pa./Abington) found junior Nicholas Ruggiero (Califon, NJ/Voorhees) in front of the net with Ruggiero burying it to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead just over one minute into the game.

Sophomore Max Brown (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) put Wilkes up by two with 12:16 left in the quarter when he took a pass from junior Matt LaSorsa (Copiague, N.Y./Copiague) and put it past the Giants goalkeeper.

Sophomore Matthew Bush (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) scored a man-up goal with 11:02 on the clock with an assist from junior Jeremy Kachel (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) to stretch the lead to 3-0.

Keystone scored an unassisted goal in the fifth minute to cut the lead to 3-1.

Wink recorded his second goal of the season unassisted with 5:07 left in the quarter, followed about 90 seconds later by and Bush's second tally of the game to give the Colonels a 5-1 lead.

The Giants notched another goal with 2:51 remaining in the first quarter, as Wilkes entered the second quarter with a 5-2 lead.

Freshman John Luna (Valley Center, CA/Valley Center) recorded his first career goal with 12:48 on the clock, followed by freshman Evan Stolicker (Baldwinsville, NY/Charles W. Baker) securing his first career score with an assist from Wink in the 18th minute.

Ruggiero recorded his second goal of the game with 11:31 left with an assist from Bush, followed by the first score of the season from sophomore JT Weitzel (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll) to give Wilkes a 9-2 lead before Ruggiero completed his third career hat trick with just over six minutes until halftime. Brown scored goals at 3:36 and 2:59, the second with an assist from Stolicker, to secure his first career hat trick and push the lead to 12-2 before sophomore Gerard Setteducato (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) finished the scoring with an unassisted tally with under a minute left.

Freshman Carter Whittemore (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) earned the first victory of his career, making one save in the effort.

Wilkes returns to action on Wednesday when it will host Rosemont College for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference contest at Schmidt Stadium.
