Wilkes Men's Lacrosse Earns Rain-Shortened First Victory since Program Rebirth 13-2 over Keystone
EDWARDSVILLE – Mother Nature wouldn't let the Wilkes University men's lacrosse team enjoy a full-length victory, but its 13-2 win in one half of play at Schmidt Stadium on Saturday afternoon over Keystone College will do.
The Colonels improved to 1-1 on the season with the win.
Wilkes wasted no time getting the scoring started when sophomore
John Wink (Glenside, Pa./Abington) found junior
Nicholas Ruggiero (Califon, NJ/Voorhees) in front of the net with Ruggiero burying it to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead just over one minute into the game.
Sophomore
Max Brown (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) put Wilkes up by two with 12:16 left in the quarter when he took a pass from junior
Matt LaSorsa (Copiague, N.Y./Copiague) and put it past the Giants goalkeeper.
Sophomore
Matthew Bush (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) scored a man-up goal with 11:02 on the clock with an assist from junior
Jeremy Kachel (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) to stretch the lead to 3-0.
Keystone scored an unassisted goal in the fifth minute to cut the lead to 3-1.
Wink recorded his second goal of the season unassisted with 5:07 left in the quarter, followed about 90 seconds later by and Bush's second tally of the game to give the Colonels a 5-1 lead.
The Giants notched another goal with 2:51 remaining in the first quarter, as Wilkes entered the second quarter with a 5-2 lead.
Freshman
John Luna (Valley Center, CA/Valley Center) recorded his first career goal with 12:48 on the clock, followed by freshman
Evan Stolicker (Baldwinsville, NY/Charles W. Baker) securing his first career score with an assist from Wink in the 18
th minute.
Ruggiero recorded his second goal of the game with 11:31 left with an assist from Bush, followed by the first score of the season from sophomore
JT Weitzel (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll) to give Wilkes a 9-2 lead before Ruggiero completed his third career hat trick with just over six minutes until halftime. Brown scored goals at 3:36 and 2:59, the second with an assist from Stolicker, to secure his first career hat trick and push the lead to 12-2 before sophomore
Gerard Setteducato (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) finished the scoring with an unassisted tally with under a minute left.
Freshman
Carter Whittemore (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) earned the first victory of his career, making one save in the effort.
Wilkes returns to action on Wednesday when it will host Rosemont College for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference contest at Schmidt Stadium.
