DeSales Sweeps Season Series with 6-2 Win Over Wilkes
CENTER VALLEY, PA – DeSales University starting pitcher Felix Martinez Jr. went seven innings allowing just one Wilkes run on seven hits to lift the Bulldogs to a 6-2 season sweep of the Colonels on Sunday afternoon at Butz Field.
Wilkes dropped to 5-9 overall and 0-3 in MAC Freedom contests following the series sweep while DeSales improved to 7-7 overall and 3-0 in league games.
DeSales opened a 2-0 lead after one inning of play using a Wilkes throwing error to score its first tally and a sacrifice fly for the other. Wilkes responded in the second using back-to-back singles to put runners in scoring position. Jarrett Clymer crossed the plate for the Colonels first run thanks to an RBI single to right field from
Keaton Allison (Aiken, SC/Aiken) cutting the Bulldog advantage to 2-1.
DeSales pushed its lead up to 5-1 scoring three runs in the third using a two-run double and RBI single to plate the tallies. A Wilkes wild pitch in the ninth gave the Bulldogs some insurance room as the Colonels were only able to rally for one run of their own in the bottom of the ninth after a
Joshua Slocum (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) sacrifice fly scored
Jack Fischer (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley).
Wilkes outhit DeSales 10-7 in the game with
Joe Champi (Dupont, PA/Pittston) leading the way finishing 3-for-4 at the plate. Clymer and Fischer each added two hits.
Matthew Reese (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro) started and went 2.2 innings receiving the loss on the mound allowing four hits and five runs (four earned).
Nicholas Poyer (Howell, NJ/Howell),
Matt Amaral (Taylor, PA/Riverside) and
Matt Kaster (Traben-Trabach, Germany/Crestwood) all pitched in relief doing an admiral job shutting down the DeSales offense combining to allow just three hits and one run over the final six innings.
Wilkes returns to play Tuesday with a non-conference nine-inning game at Penn State Berks starting at 3:30 p.m.
