Wilkes Softball Drops Pair at Moravian
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Wilkes University softball team dropped a heartbreaker 2-1 in game one before falling 10-1 in five innings at Moravian College on Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Colonels fell to 10-4 on the season.
In game one, the Greyhounds got on the board first in the bottom of the second with one run on one hit and one error.
Wilkes tied the game in the top of the seventh with one run on one hit and one error. Sophomore
Caitlin Brown (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) reached second on a fielding error and was pinch run for by junior
Mia Lussier (Somerset, MA/Somerset Berkley). Lussier came into score on the next play when sophomore Haley
Welker hit a double to right-center to tie the game.
Moravian won the game with a walk-off two-out single in the bottom of the seventh.
Freshman
Celine Podlesney (Hazle Twp., PA/Hazleton) took her second loss of the season, pitching all 6.2 innings and surrendering two runs (one earned) on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Welker led the Lady Colonels at the plate in game one, going 1-for-3 with one RBI.
In game two, the Greyhounds jumped out in front with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the third.
Wilkes cut the deficit to 3-1 in the top of the fourth when senior
Lacey Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) launched her first home run of the season to right field.
Moravian put the game away with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth on four hits to take a 10-1 lead.
Freshman
Gracen Staunton (Kernersville, NC/Northwest Guilford) took the loss in the circle, surrendering seven runs on nine hits with two walks in 3.0 innings to fall to 5-2 on the season.
???????Bixler led the Lady Colonels at the plate in game two, finishing 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.
Wilkes returns to the field on Saturday when it will travel to Eastern University for a 12:00 p.m. MAC Freedom doubleheader.
