Wilkes Baseball Drops 11-6 Decision at Keystone
LA PLUME, Pa. – The Wilkes University baseball dropped an 11-6 decision at Keystone College on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.
The Colonels fell to 10-20 this season.
Wilkes jumped out in front first with one run in the top of the first on two hits.
Jack Fischer (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) hit a one-out single to right and advanced to second on a passed ball before coming into score on
Joshua Slocum (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights)'s double to right-center.
Keystone responded in the bottom of the first with four runs on five hits to take a 4-1 lead. The Giants pushed their lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the second with two runs on two hits.
The Colonels cut the deficit to 6-2 in the top of the third with one run on one hit and one Keystone error.
Brady Wing (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) led off the frame with a single to center and moved to second when Fischer walked. After a double play moved Fischer to third, Slocum reached on an error that allowed Fischer to come home.
The Giants added their seventh run in the bottom of the fifth with one run on three hits.
Wilkes clawed back in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs on three hits and an error. Wing reached on a one-out error and moved to second when Fischer singled to right with both coming in to score on Slocum's three-run homer to left field to cut the score to 7-5.
The Colonels brought the deficit to one run in the top of the eighth with one run on two hits and one error.
Matthew Reese (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro) started with a two-out single to right field and advanced to third on a throwing error by the shortstop that allowed Wing to reach first. Fischer brought Reese home with an RBI single to right to make the score 7-6.
Keystone responded with four runs in the bottom of the eighth on two hits and one error.
Matt Amaral (Taylor, PA/Riverside) took the loss in his first collegiate start, surrendering seven runs on 11 hits in five innings with one walk and three strikeouts.
Fischer (3-4, two runs, one RBI) and Slocum (2-5, one run, four RBI's) led Wilkes at the plate.
The Colonels return to action on Friday when they host Manhattanville for the opener of the two teams MAC Freedom series starting at 3:30 p.m.
