Ninth Inning Rally Downs Wilkes Baseball against Scranton
KINGSTON – The Wilkes University baseball team wrapped up non-conference play for the 2017 season with a 9-5 loss to the University of Scranton at Artillery Park on Tuesday afternoon.
The Colonels are now 10-24 overall this season.
Scranton jumped out in the top of the first with two runs on two hits and added a third run in the top of the third on two hits.
Wilkes cut the deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the third with one run on one hit.
Tanner Smith (Upper Black Eddy, PA/Palisades) led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on
Brady Wing (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt)'s infield single before Smith moved to third when
Jack Fischer (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) flied out to deep center field. After a caught stealing,
Tyler Walther (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) was hit by a pitch and
Joshua Slocum (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) walked to load the bases before
James Brown (Covington, PA/North Pocono) walked to bring in the Colonels first run.
The Royals pushed their lead to 5-1 in the top of the fifth with two runs on three hits.
The Colonels plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to 5-3. Brown led off with a single to right field and advanced to second on a wild pitch before
Matt Dacey (Mountaintop, PA/Holy Redeemer) walked and was pinch-run for by
Quinn Kelly (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley). After a strikeout and a double steal,
Keaton Allison (Aiken, SC/Aiken) came through with a single through the right side to bring home both Brown and Allison.
Wilkes made it a one-run game in the bottom of the seventh, scoring one run on three hits. After a double wiped out a lead-off single from Fischer, Slocum walked and advanced to second before Brown singled back up the middle to bring him home with the fourth run of the game.
Scranton took a 9-5 lead in the top of the ninth with four runs on three hits and an error.
Matt Amaral (Taylor, PA/Riverside) fell to 0-2 this season after surrendering four runs (three earned) on three hits.
Fischer (3-5) and Brown (2-3, one run, two RBI's) led the Colonels at the plate.
Wilkes returns to the field on Friday for a 3:30 p.m. MAC Freedom game at FDU-Florham.
