Gregoire Scores as Wilkes Women's Soccer Opens Season with 1-1 Draw

EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University women's soccer team opened its 2017 season Friday night at Schmidt Stadium with a 1-1 tie against #19 Penn State-Berks after double overtime did not produce a winner.

Freshman Catherine Gregoire (New Cumberland, PA/Trinity) tied the game at one in her first career game for the Lady Colonels 58:18 into the contest. The goal came off a perfectly placed corner kick into the box by sophomore Haley Evans (Deptford, NJ/GCIT).

After a tame first 10-minute overtime period, Wilkes (0-0-1) brought the pressure to the Nittany Lions in the second overtime, peppering the net with six shots. A great diving stop by Penn State-Berks goalkeeper Paige Elmy in the 109th minute on a shot by Dianna Connor (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) kept the game in a draw.

The Lady Colonels came from behind after allowing a Penn State-Berks (0-0-1) goal twelve minutes into the game.

Junior goalkeeper Courtney Stanley (Yardville, NJ/Steinert) kept the game at a one goal deficit for Wilkes when she made a big save 41:38 into the first half. For the game Courtney posted six saves.

Wilkes outshot Penn State-Berks, a sweet sixteen participant last season, by a count of 18-9 with 11 shots on target to seven for the Nittany Lions. The Lady Colonels also held the edge in corner kicks with an eight to six advantage. Both teams committed 10 fouls.

Wilkes will continue non-conference action when they face Muhlenberg College for a Labor Day showdown on Monday, September 4 at Schmidt Stadium. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
