Grohowski Scores but Wilkes Field Hockey Falls 2-1 to Ithaca
SELINSGROVE, PA – A Wilkes University field hockey come from behind effort fell just short in a 2-1 defeat to Ithaca College on Sunday afternoon in the consolation game of the Connie Harnum Classic held at Susquehanna University.
After trailing the Bombers 2-0 at halftime, Wilkes (0-2) pulled to within a goal when sophomore
Amber Grohowski (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) tallied her first career goal with just under three minutes remaining in the contest.
Megan Kane (Kingston, PA/Wyoming Valley West) provided the pass off a penalty corner for her second assist of the young season.
The Lady Colonels continued their push to tie the score before regulation ended but shots by
Kayla Gronkowski (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) and
Gianna Gennetts (West Pittston, PA/Wyoming Area) were unsuccessful in the closing seconds.
Michaela Donohue provided both first half goals for Ithaca (1-1).
Wilkes held the 12-7 advantage in both shots and penalty corners for the game. Shots on goal were even at four apiece.
Haley Gayoski (Forty Fort, PA/Wyoming Valley West) and Kane led Wilkes with three shots apiece.
Dallas Kendra (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) made one save for the Lady Colonels while Savanna Lenker made three saves for the Bombers.
Grohowski and Maddie Kelly were named to the All-Tournament team for Wilkes.
The Lady Colonels continue the non-conference portion of the schedule with the home opener at Schmidt Stadium on Wednesday, September 6 at 7:00 p.m. against Marywood University.
