Wilkes Women's Volleyball Grabs First Victory by Downing Clarks Summit 3-1

CLARKS SUMMIT, PA – The Wilkes University women's volleyball team captured its first win of the season with an impressive road performance on Thursday night by defeating Clarks Summit University 3-1. The scores of the sets were 22-25, 25-19, 25-16, and 25-13.

Jamey Mikovich (Nesquehoning, PA/Panther Valley) led the way with a season high 13 kills and a .400 hitting percentage for Wilkes (1-4). She also had three blocks and six digs. Alexis Morgan (Walnutport, PA/Northampton) dished out a season high 34 assists. Leading the way defensively was libero Shayna Fehrle (Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert) with a season high 17 digs. Grace Boyle (Andreas, PA/Marion Catholic) added nine digs and five kills while Alex Ferrier (Cressona, PA/Blue Mountain) filled the stat sheet with eight service aces, six kills, and four digs.

The Lady Colonels started the first set strong by jumping out to a 4-0 lead. However, Clarks Summit (0-4) was able to take the opening set by a score of 25-22.

Wilkes started the second set by scoring five straight points on a service run by Morgan and this time were able to finish just as strong. With the lead at 19-18 the Lady Colonels scored the next five points on three errors by the Lady Defenders and kills by Boyle and Mikovich to go up 24-18. Madison Scarfaro (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) ended the set at 25-19 with one of her five kills.

The momentum carried over to the third set as Wilkes jumped out to a 9-2 lead behind a great service run by Ferrier. The Lady Colonels cruised from there to a 25-16 victory to grab a 2-1 advantage in the match.

The fourth set followed a similar storyline with the Lady Colonels finding themselves ahead 7-1 off another long service run by Ferrier. There again was no let up as Wilkes took its third and decisive set 25-13.

Wilkes led Clarks Summit by a 40-30 advantage in kills, 15-10 in aces, 53-40 in digs, and .196 to .066 in hitting percentage.

Wilkes next takes to the court when they travel to Haverford, Pa. on Saturday, September 9 to play a tri-match against Haverford College and Penn State-Berks. The games will be at 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. respectively.
