Kelley Records Double-Double in Wilkes Women's Basketball's 75-59 Loss to King's
WILKES-BARRE –
Maddie Kelley (Dallas, PA/Dallas) recorded her first career double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds but the Wilkes University women's basketball team lost 75-59 to crosstown rival King's College on Hall of Fame Day at the Marts Center Saturday afternoon.
Wilkes is now 4-12 overall and 0-6 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) while King's improved to 9-8 overall and 4-2 in the MAC Freedom.
The Lady Colonels held an 8-7 lead 4:31 into the first quarter with six points coming from
Alyssa Alfano (Dunmore, PA/Holy Cross). The Lady Monarchs would respond to take a 12-8 lead with the next five points. A
Sierra Smith (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) three-pointer tied the score at 14 with 58 seconds left in the quarter but Wilkes trailed 16-15 heading to the second quarter.
Kelley provided a spark for the Lady Colonels off the bench in the second quarter with seven points and four rebounds. Her trey with 6:10 left in the quarter gave Wilkes a 20-19 lead.
Chelsea Erkes (Wernersville, PA/Conrad Weiser) nailed a three-pointer to push the lead to 29-25 before King's closed on a 7-3 run to send the game into halftime tied at 32.
King's came out of halftime and produced a great third quarter where the Lady Monarchs built their lead to as many as 13 points and led 56-45 heading to the final 10 minutes.
The lead was extended to a game-high 19 with 5:47 left but Wilkes was able to go on an 11-2 run over the next 2:43 to get within 10 points at 66-56. In the run Alfano made four free-throws and
Catey McFadden (Doylestown, PA/Archbishop Wood) nailed a shot from behind the arc. The Lady Colonels were unable to close any closer in the final three minutes of play.
Kelley's career-high 16 points and 11 rebounds came in 21 minutes of action and on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor. She was also 3-of-4 from the foul line and had two assists. Alfano joined Kelley in double figures with 11 points. McFadden finished with eight points and
Emily Sofranko (Jim Thorpe, PA/Marian Catholic) had seven points, three rebounds, and three assists.
Gianna Roberts (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) pulled in eight rebounds for the Lady Colonels.
Alexis Steeber had a game-high 23 points to lead the King's attack and she also grabbed 10 rebounds. Rebecca Prociak added 19 points and Mackenzie Yori had 15.
The Wilkes bench led King's 29-13 in scoring.
The Lady Colonels play their last non-conference game of the season next when they travel to Reading, Pa. to take on Alvernia University Monday evening at 6:00 p.m.
