Wilkes Men's Volleyball Splits Saturday Matches at Cardinal Classic
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Wilkes University men's volleyball team closed out the Cardinal Classic hosted by St. John Fisher College Saturday afternoon by splitting two matches. First Wilkes fell 3-0 (25-9, 25-19, 25-20) to Endicott College before closing the day with a 3-1 victory (25-16, 22-25, 25-23, 25-17) over Bard College.
Wilkes now stands at 1-3 on the season. Endicott is receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 15 Poll and with the win over Wilkes moved to 2-0 on the season. Bard fell to 0-3 with its loss to the Colonels.
Brian Schumacher (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) had a career-high seven kills and three blocks to lead Wilkes in the loss against Endicott.
Cole Hefner (East Greenville, Pa./Southern Lehigh) added four kills and two blocks.
Salvatore Purpura (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin) and
Daniel Sales (Laflin, Pa./James M. Coughlin) led the Colonels with nine assists.
Kyle Price (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) had seven digs and
Dylan Smith (York, Pa./Dallastown) recorded three kills and five digs.
Bryn Lipton led the Gulls with 10 kills and five blocks.
Sales put down a career-best 19 kills in the victory against Bard. He hit 19-of-30 with four errors for a .500 hitting percentage. He also dished out 12 assists to record his first double-double of the season and the ninth of his career.
Hefner reached a career-high with 10 kills going 10-of-15 with no errors for a .667 hitting percentage. He also had a team-high three blocks.
Price led the Wilkes defense with a season-high 11 digs and Purpura assisted a season-best 25 times. Potter had five kills and two blocks and Smith added four kills and five digs.
Tyler Zowaski each had nine kills and Stefan Briggs had seven for the Raptors.
The Colonels host Loras College in their first home match of the season Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at the Marts Center.
