Wilkes Women's Basketball Sets Assists Mark in 93-79 win at Penn State Hazleton

HAZLETON, Pa. – The Wilkes University women's basketball team set a new program record with 27 assists in its 93-79 win at Penn State Hazleton Monday night in non-conference action. The Lady Colonels were led by double-doubles from Gianna Roberts (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) and Catey McFadden (Doylestown, PA/Archbishop Wood).

The Lady Colonels built their lead to as many as 27 points with 5:10 left in the game and with the victory improved to 4-8 on the season while Penn State Hazleton fell to 4-5.

Wilkes scored its most points since putting up 96 points against Penn State Wilkes-Barre on November 19, 2011. The 27 assists beat the previous school record of 26 set on January 29, 1990 against Marywood.

Wilkes led Penn State Hazleton by 20 rebounds pulling down 63 compared to the Lady Lions' 43. The total was just five shy of the school record of 68 set earlier this season against Penn State Wilkes-Barre. The Lady Colonels also dominated 54-24 in points in the paint and 30-3 in bench scoring.

The Lady Colonels jumped out to a 6-1 lead with buckets from Roberts, McFadden, and Alyssa Alfano (Dunmore, PA/Holy Cross) within the first two minutes of action and took their first double digit lead at 15-5 with 4:37 left in the first quarter after Alfano made two free throws. Wilkes led 25-11 after the first quarter.

An Alfano three-pointer put Wilkes ahead by 20 for the first time at 35-15 with 8:20 left in the second quarter. The Lady Lions cut the lead to 13 points with 3:43 left in the quarter but the Lady Colonels went on a 12-2 run to go back up by 23 points and took a 57-34 lead into halftime.

Wilkes maintained its lead and led 75-52 after the third quarter. An Ahriyah Richardson-Watson (Owings Mills, MD/Newtown) layup pushed the lead to a game-high 27 points at 89-62 with just over five minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Roberts had 16 points and tied a career-high with 14 rebounds for her second double-double of the season and the third of her career. McFadden recorded her third double-double of the season and career with 15 points and 14 rebounds. She also recorded a season-high four assists and tied a career-high with four blocks.

Emily Sofranko (Jim Thorpe, PA/Marian Catholic) dished out a career-best eight assists and Vanessa Whitecavage (Shenandoah, PA/Marian Catholic) and Kelsey Yustat (Hunlock Creek, PA/Northwest Area) also set career-highs with five assists each. Alfano scored 16 points and Jamie Campbell (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) registered a season-high 10 points.

Mckenzie Prutsman scored 33 points for Penn State Hazleton and Shelby Berger added 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Wilkes returns to Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom action when it travels to Doylestown, Pa. to take on Delaware Valley Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m.
