Wilkes Field Hockey Scores Four Unanswered to Take Down Delaware Valley 4-1

DOYLESTOWN, PA – Ali Dunn (Pittston, PA/Pittston) scored two goals for the second consecutive game to help lead the Wilkes University field hockey team to four unanswered goals in defeating Delaware Valley University 4-1 Friday night at Lipinski Field in a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) game.

The victory moved Wilkes to 3-1 in the conference and 7-7 overall. DelVal dropped to 0-4 in the MAC Freedom and 5-8 overall.

After falling behind 1-0 just 3:45 into the contest Dunn put the Colonels on the scoreboard at the 20:54 mark. During a scramble in front of the Aggies cage Maddie Kelley (Dallas, PA/Dallas) was able to get the ball to Dunn to tie the score at 1-1.

Kelley set up the Colonels second goal as well. In the 33rd minute her initial shot was saved but Kelley collected the rebound and slid the ball over to Cheyenne Mazzocca (Slatington, PA/Northern Lehigh) for the go-ahead goal. It was the fourth assist of the season for Kelley and the fourth goal for Mazzocca.

Dallas Kendra (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) helped protect the lead when she made her second save of the game just 1:18 into the second half. Shortly after, Haley Gayoski (Forty Fort, PA/Wyoming Valley West) scored off an assist from Lauren Shiplett (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) on a penalty corner play to extend the Wilkes lead to 3-1 at the 42:16 mark. The goal was the fifth of the season for Gayoski while Shiplett picked up her third helper.

Less than three minutes later Dunn put the game out of reach with her second goal of the game and her fifth of the season. With DelVal playing a man short after a green card, Dunn made a move around the Aggies goalkeeper and scored at the 45:13 mark.

Kendra made saves in the 54th and 55th minutes to bring her total to four saves for the game as she picked up the victory in goal for the Colonels. The Wilkes defense did not allow an Aggies shot in the final 15 minutes.

The two sides each took 11 shots on the night with Wilkes hitting the target eight times compared to five for DelVal. The Aggies held a slight 6-4 edge in penalty corners.

The Colonels return to the field next Wednesday, October 17 for their final regular season home game when they welcome cross-town rival and MAC Freedom foe King's College to Schmidt Stadium.
