Late Comeback Attempt Falls Short for Wilkes Women's Soccer
MADISON, N.J. – The Wilkes University women's soccer team was unable to erase an early deficit, losing 2-1 to FDU-Florham on Friday evening. This was the Colonels last regular season match before the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom playoffs begin next week.
The defeat drops Wilkes to 8-6-2 and 5-2 in the MAC Freedom. FDU-Florham improves to 12-5-2 and 3-3-1 in MAC Freedom play with the victory.
The Colonels fell behind early in this one as the Devils jumped out to an early lead with a 13
th minute goal.
Less than ten minutes later, FDU-Florham chipped one in past the Wilkes goalkeeper to give themselves a 2-0 lead just 22 minutes into the match.
After going into halftime down two goals, a different Colonels team came to play in the second half as they pressured the Devils with 14 shots, six of which were on frame.
The offensive onslaught paid off for Wilkes as a failed clearing attempt deep in the Devils end found the back of the net off the foot of
Nicolette Towlen (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) to pull the Colonels within one in the 82
nd minute.
Emily Egan (West Long Brach, NJ/Shore Regional) would take two cracks at knotting the game, first in the 83
rd minute and then in the 86
th but both shots were saved by the Devils goalkeeper. The second attempt would result in a
Haley Evans (Deptford, NJ/GCIT) corner kick which ended in a
Delfina Bracchi (Central Islip, NY/Central Islip) header that missed wide to end the Colonels comeback hopes.
Wilkes outshot FDU-Florham 18-11 while also holding the advantage in corner kicks, 4-2.
The Colonels had already locked up second-place in the MAC Freedom and will host DeSales in a semifinals match at Schmidt Stadium on Wednesday, October 31
st at 7:00 p.m.
