Second Half Goal Edges Wilkes Field Hockey at Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA – The Wilkes University field hockey team dropped a 2-1 non-conference game at Elizabethtown College Wednesday afternoon after the home team struck for a second half goal to break the tie.

Wilkes fell to 6-5 overall with the loss to the Landmark Conference foe while Elizabethtown improved to 9-2.

The Blue Jays didn't waste time in grabbing the lead as Maggie Fees scored 52 seconds into the first half.

The Colonels put their first shot on goal in the 11th minute when Amber Grohowski's (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) shot was saved. Dallas Kendra (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) then made three saves before Maddie Kelley (Dallas, PA/Dallas) was stopped by the Blue Jays goalkeeper in the 28th minute.

Wilkes kept the pressure on and found the first-half equalizer in in the 29th minute when Lauren Shiplett (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) scored on a shot from the top after Zoe Stepanski (Dallas, PA/Dallas) found her with a penalty corner insert pass. It was the fifth goal of the season for the freshman while Stepanski set up her sixth score of the year.

As the game moved into the second half, Kendra made two saves in the 44th minute to keep the game tied and the Colonels defense blocked a shot after a penalty corner in the 52nd minute. However, Elizabethtown was able to find the cage with the go-ahead goal at the 57:32 mark when Fees tallied her second of the game.

Kendra totaled six saves to help keep the Colonels in contention until the final horn but the Wilkes offense was unable to muster pressure on the Elizabethtown defense in the final 35-minutes.

The Colonels look to remain unbeaten in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom play when they host FDU-Florham on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. The Devils are receiving votes in the latest NFHCA Division III National Coaches Poll. It will also be Senior Night at Schmidt Stadium as Wilkes recognizes Kendra, Haley Gayoski (Forty Fort, PA/Wyoming Valley West), Kayla Gronkowski (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) and Megan Kane (Kingston, PA/Wyoming Valley West).
