Wilkes Men's Soccer Drops Tough Match to DeSales
EDWARDSVILLE, PA – The Wilkes University men's soccer team fell to DeSales 3-1 on Saturday night at Schmidt Stadium. DeSales used an early second half goal to put the game out of reach.
The loss drops Wilkes to 6-4-1 overall and 1-1 in the MAC Freedom. With the win, DeSales reaches the .500 mark at 5-5-1 and 1-1 in conference play.
The match got off to an inauspicious start as a DeSales shot deflected off a Wilkes defender and into the net for an own goal to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead at the 5:01 mark.
Wilkes would answer back quickly with a beautiful goal from Camry Huff (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro), assisted by Kyle Bentz (Camp Hill, PA/Camp Hill), for his fourth of the year to tie the game at the 8:09 mark.
After both sides had their opportunities, DeSales took the lead off a corner kick when Michael Kirby headed one past the Wilkes keeper to put the Bulldogs back on top 2-1.
DeSales would deliver an early blow in the second half after Tim Gallagher (Easton, PA/Notre Dame Green Pond) made a diving save on a streaking Kirby but the rebound found the foot of AJ Schnroettner to give the Bulldogs some breathing room at 3-1 just two minutes into the half.
Wilkes had their fair share of chances as they outshot DeSales 17-9 with a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal. Furthermore, the Colonels had 10 corner kicks to the Bulldogs two.
This was a physical game throughout as both teams were whistled for 13 fouls. Furthermore, each teams were given their fair share of cards with Wilkes earning four and DeSales two.
Wilkes looks to get back in the MAC Freedom win column when it heads to crosstown rival King's on Tuesday October 9th for a 7:00 p.m. match.
