Wilkes Women's Swimming Wins First Meet of Season
MADISON, N.J. – The Wilkes University women's swimming team defeated FDU-Florham (0-1) 90-57 in a Middle Atlantic Conference meet on Saturday afternoon. With the win, women's swimming starts the season with a victory for the first time since its relaunch in 2014-2015.
The Colonels started the afternoon by earning 11 points in the 200 yard medley as Abby Keating (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove), Julia Rostron (Harleysville, PA/Souderton), Allie Aspey (Dover, PA/Dover) and Jessica Turnitza (Cumbola, PA/Pottsville) finished with a time of 2:09.66.
Aspey would follow that up by winning the 200 yard freestyle at 2:18.77.
Turnitza won both of her events on Saturday, starting with the 50 yard freestyle (29.51) over teammate Cassie Merrill (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) (31.42) and finishing with the 100 yard freestyle (1:03.85) ahead of Rostron (1:05.83).
Keating would earn nine points for the Colonels when she won the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:29.22. She would add a second place in the 500 yard freestyle finishing behind FDU—Florham's Molly Miller.
Merrill narrowly missed out on winning the 100 yard backstroke as she finished .27 hundredths of a second behind FDU-Florham's Gianna Ritto to earn second place with a time of 1:17.88.
Wilkes women's swimming returns to the pool on October 20th for a meet at Mount Saint Mary College at 1:00 p.m.
