Hamilton Outlasts Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey 3-2 in Overtime Despite Barrow's Two Goals
CLINTON, N.Y. – Wilkes University's
Tyler Barrow (Massapequa, NY/) scored two goals but host Hamilton College scored :23 into overtime to secure a 3-2 win over the Colonels Tuesday night at Russell Sage Rink.
Wilkes saw its three-game win streak snapped falling to 4-3 overall. Hamilton improved to 2-1 on the season following the home non-conference victory.
Barrow put Wilkes up early blasting a shot immediately off a faceoff win by
Wade Novak (Oak Ridge, NJ/) just :52 into the first period. Both teams traded scoring chances over the rest of the period but
Brandon Gordon (Sault Ste. Marie, MI/) was up to the task making several point-blank saves to keep the Colonel ahead by one goal after twenty minutes of play.
Neither team could muster any goals in the second period as Wilkes continued to hold its 1-0 advantage heading into the third frame.
Hamilton tied the game 3:17 into the third period thanks to a 5-on-3 power play as Jason Brochu found the back of the net off a scramble in front of Gordon. Three minutes later the hosts took their first lead of the contest, again on the power play, as a Bennett Morrison wrist shot beat Gordon to the stick side.
The Hamilton lead was short-lived as Barrow came through again flipping a back hand rebound past Pete Negron sending the game to overtime.
Hamilton took possession early in the overtime period and Nick Ursitti took a pass in front of the net from Brochu slipping it past Gordon to lift Hamilton to the extra period win.
Hamilton held a slim 35-31 shot advantage while winning 41-of-68 faceoffs in the contest. Hamilton finished 2-for-9 on the power play, while the Colonels went scoreless in the extra-man opportunities in three tries.
Gordon finished with 32 saves for Wilkes while Negron made 29 stops in net for Hamilton.
Wilkes remains idle through the Thanksgiving holiday returning to action Friday, November 30 with a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) and UCHC matchup at Manhattanville College. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
