Smith Paces Wilkes Women's Basketball in Loss to King's
WILKES-BARRE -
Sierra Smith (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) led the Wilkes University women's basketball team with 11 points but cross-town rival King's College took the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) victory 82-49 in McGrane Gymnasium Tuesday evening.
Wilkes fell to 4-20 overall and 0-13 in the MAC Freedom while King's stands at 15-9 overall and 10-3 in the conference after the win.
The Lady Colonels built a 7-4 lead after the first 3:30 of the first quarter of play on a layup by
Alyssa Alfano (Dunmore, PA/Holy Cross), three-pointer by
Catey McFadden (Doylestown, PA/Archbishop Wood), and a baseline jumper by
Nicole Farrell (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren). The Lady Monarchs answered with an eight-point run to take a 12-7 lead before
Gianna Roberts (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) responded with a layup and made the ensuing free-throw after taking contact to make the score 12-10 with 3:14 left on the first quarter clock.
King's took a 16-11 lead into the second quarter and scored the first 10 points to build a double digit lead. McFadden stopped the Lady Monarchs run with her second three of the contest with 7:05 left in the quarter and started an 8-0 run for the Lady Colonels over the next 2:41 of game time.
Chelsea Erkes (Wernersville, PA/Conrad Weiser) came off the bench to drain a trey and Smith hit a deep two to bring Wilkes back to within seven points at 26-19. King's closed the quarter with a 12-4 run to take a 38-23 into the halftime break.
McFadden led Wilkes at the break with six points but picked up her third foul with 6:20 left in the second quarter.
The Lady Monarchs built their lead to as many as 29 points before the Colonels went on a 12-0 run over the final 3:14 of the third quarter to head to the final quarter down 54-37. Erkes had five points and
Kelsey Yustat (Hunlock Creek, PA/Northwest Area) hit a jumper before the buzzer to cap the scoring run.
Smith had a strong scoring fourth quarter for Wilkes with seven points but King's was hot from the floor as well and opened a 33-point lead at 77-44 with 3:45 left to play and at the final score of 82-49.
Smith also tied a career-high with four assists and shot 5-of-7 from the floor. McFadden added nine points and seven rebounds. Farrell tied a career-high with eight rebounds and scored seven points while Roberts tied her for the team lead with eight boards.
Emily Sofranko (Jim Thorpe, PA/Marian Catholic) dished out four assists and Erkes finished with eight points.
Mackenzie Yori scored a game-high 25 points and was 6-of-10 from behind the arc for King's. Rebecca Prociak added 18 points and nine rebounds.
The Lady Colonels close out the season with Senior Day against Eastern University Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the Marts Center.
